Updated: December 28, 2019

The race for the prize envied by goal scorers across Europe is under way, with the usual suspects in pursuit

Barcelona star Lionel Messi scooped his sixth European Golden Shoe award last season and the talismanic forward is out to retain the accolade in 2019-20.

Messi held off competition from some of the continent’s best goal scorers and grabbed the award for the third year in a row, leaving behind the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jamie Vardy and Mohamed Salah trailing in his wake.

Cristiano Ronaldo was uncharacteristically off the pace in his first season in Italy and will no doubt be eager to regain his form this season.

With the race well and truly under way, top goal scorers from across Europe’s top leagues in 2019-20 are as follow:

#1 Robert Lewandowski | Bayern Munich | 19 goals (38)

Robert Lewandowski has been one of the most iconic goal scorers over the past decade and is underway to surpass his tally of 22 from last season.

The Polish certainly have geared his performances up  in 2019-20 and, hopefully if he remain injury free, he will be a serious challenge for the Golden Shoe.

#2 Timo Werner | RB Leipzig | 18 goals (36)

Timo Werner hit a career best of 21 Bundesliga goals in 2016-17, but failed to continue that form in the subsequent campaigns. However, he looks to have improved in 2019-20.

#3 Ciro Immobile | Lazio | 17 goals (34)

Ciro has been one of the most consistent goal scorers of Serie A over the recent years and hit the ground running in 2019-20.

He was the top scorer in Italy in the 2013-14 and 2017-18 seasons, but the European Golden Shoe eluded him on those occasions, he’ll hope to redress this term.

#4 Jamie Vardy | Leicester City | 17 goals (34)

Leicester City have experienced an upturn in fortunes since the arrival of Brendan Rodgers and one of the main beneficiaries appears to be Jamie Vardy.

The England international looks to have revived his former self and is showing a great class in front of the goal.

#5 Lionel Messi | Barcelona | 13 goals (26)

Six-time Golden Shoe winner and current trophy-holder Lionel Messi is naturally among the contenders for the 2019-20 title.

He finished last season with 36 goals to secure his third consecutive Golden Shoe on the way to domestic glory.

#6 Wissam Ben Yedder | Monaco | 13 goals (26)

After three goal-laden seasons in Spain with Sevilla, Wissam has returned to Ligue 1, after joining Monaco and he appears to be relishing the challenge.

#7 Shon Weissman | Wolfsberger | 17 goals (25.5)

Israel international Shon Weissman joined Wolfsberger from Maccabi Haifi ahead of the 2019-20 season and is challenging Erling Haaland for the top scorer award in Austria’s Bundesliga.

#8 Karim Benzema | Real Madrid | 12 goals (24)

Unfortunately not being at his best for the recent years, Karim Benzema has rediscovered his striker’s instinct and is back to his devastatingly clinical self.

#9 Romelu Lukaku | Inter | 12 goals (24)

Afte a disappointing time at Manchester United Lukaku had a tough time to prove himself as a striker,Hence he has taken up the challenge commendably and is thriving with the service he is receiving from his team-mates at Inter Milan.

#10 Erling Braut Haaland | Red Bull Salzburg | 16 goals (24)

Towering teenage striker Erling Braut Haaland is already turning heads across Europe with his performances and has been linked with the likes of Manchester United.

As well as being in the running for the UEFA Champions League top scorer, he is a surprise contender for this season’s Golden Shoe.
